Devlog - Unity Upgrade

Devlog as of Nov 10th

It's been a month since the team has been able to meet up in a meaningful way. To get things rolling our lead engineer, Jac, helped get our unity verssion upgraded without much hassel. Unity is not very clear on how to do this so after testing, we went with the following steps:

  1. Have everyone using cloud collaboration download all assets and ensure everyone's local copy is pretty much the same.
  2. Have the leader go the Project folder and make a copy to archive, rename the copy to end with the word archive (or some name different from the original).
  3. Go to the Hub. On the Project tab, drop down the Unity Version list for your project and choose the new version you want to move to. (see screenshot)
  4.  A popup will ask you to confirm.
  5.  When finished, the game should open automatically, at which you can play test and make any modifications that are needed.  If the playtest is successful, have every team member upgrade their local copy to the same version like the leader. If the leader had to make changes to the upgraded version, team members can download those assets after their local upgrade.
  6. Each member upgrades their local copy to the new version and then downloads any final updates from the leader. (To be confirmed)
  7.  Leader and team members need to re-download any Package Manager assets that were not included in the primary Editor upgrade.
  8.  Asset store upgrades: Ideally, the version everyone got caught up on in step one should include the latest Asset Store assets. However, to keep things simpler, it might be wise to upgrade just the editor first given all the above steps, and then go through each asset and avoid assets that need to be deprecated.
  9. To avoid experimentation, go to the Asset Store and look at details of the asset. There should a "Supported Unity Versions" drip down that confirms it works with your version.

Beyond that the following actions were taken:

  • Art Director (William) set up Kira on the Laptop and began re-learning what assets from the previous delog need to be created.
  • Jac is continuing his work on our Scoreboard needed for the cut scene after each level.
  • Exec director is looking at the first level and making small improvements listed on the devlog.
